Tin Can Space Man
by ~Amanen on deviantART

That's what happens when I listen to "Space Oddity" too many times. I have three tests tomorrow, two of which I don't think I'm ready for. It's actually kind of funny, because one of the tests is geometry, and we've been using sine (and cosine and tangent), and another test is in Latin, and one of our vocab words is "sine." Since sine means "without" in Latin, it makes sense for math, because I suppose a sine wave is without end... Actually, I don't really know much of anything about sine or cosine or tangent.

I'm going to sleep now.

One the walk home from school today, I read Totto-chan. Reading and walking at the same time probably makes me look like I'm drunk or something; I kept veering off in random directions and almost walked into shrubbery at least three times. But, it was fun, because Totto-chan is a good book. My backpack was very heavy today because I had to bring my enormous geometry book home, so I took a break by the side of the railroad tracks. Reading Totto-chan on a nice sunny day by the side of the railroad sort of makes me wish I had no commitments and I could just do stuff like that all the time. But, I have school. Still, if I went to school in an abandoned train, perhaps I wouldn't care? :D (Totto-chan goes to school in an abandoned train.)

Also, the author of the book, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, is amazing. She is Japan's most popular TV personality, brought the American National Theatre of the Deaf to Japan, made the Totto Foundation to help deaf actors, is a conservationist with an interest in the Great Panda (she wrote a book about that, too!), is a director of the World Wildlife Fund-Japan, AND was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1984.

Two questions: What has she not done? And, can I be her when I grow up? (If not her, can I at least go to school in a train?)

In a completely different vein, I did some research about Major Tom today. (I should probably be researching my history project, but Major Tom is so much less controversial...) I found a song called "Mrs. Major Tom" by K.I.A., and it has very sad lyrics. Looking at those lyrics, as well as the lyrics to "Ashes to Ashes," it sounds like Major Tom did drugs or had some other dark vice to his life. But the lyrics to "Major Tom (Coming Home)" paint him as more of a hero. Inevitably, I like the hero version better. Still, if I do ever get around to writing about him, I will have a lot of trouble... He's a complex fellow, Major Tom.

For some reason, I feel it's necessary for me to emphasis, I absolutely LOVE the song "Major Tom" by Peter Schilling. Reason number one, it's just an amazing song, but reason number two? It's in answer to another song. I just find it really, really cool when people do stuff like that, especially when they do it well. I believe in Japan, people would write haiku, and then years later, someone would write a response, then someone else would do the same, and so forth. It's just... mind-boggling that we do can do stuff like that. Human connections and all that jazz, not to mention, the story of Major Tom has been developed in a number of songs, it's like he's a staple character or something, like in a ballad. Yet another reason David Bowie is my hero — he made up the guy.

Pretty sure I made that same rant before, but you know, I was thinking about it again. In drama today, we learned the first part of the dance for The Spanish Panic. It's peculiar, and I'm rather sure it hasn't been changed since it was first made for the musical in the '50s. All the same, I <3 it because it's really fun. I mean, it's dorky and stuff, but there's something amusing about acting like a dork. We've already learned the dance for another song, which I'm pretty sure is referred to by the generic title of "Song of Love." Basically, it's the main character listing off the good points of his love interest, Winnifred, nicknamed Fred. The main part for the rest of us is background, but it's fun background. With an F and an R and an E and a D and an F-R-E-D Fred! Yeah! Yep, that's most of what we sing. It's stuck in my head, go figure, as well as the opening song.

And, on a completely unmusical note (haha, pun), Leeny and Missa have set up a school newspaper. We're going to be writing about school stuff, and modern events too. I'm curious to see how this'll turn out. Hopefully, it'll go well? The only issue with a newspaper (I seem to be full of accidental puns today) is that the student body of our school seems to adamantly reject stuff like it. Anything correlated with school = INSTA DUMB as far as most of the students are concerned. That's the feeling I get, anyway. Still, it might be fun, and you never know until you try it, etc. Luckily, we won't have too many meetings. If we were going to, I might worry for my schedule. I'm busy as it is. Of course, this means I'm going to have a rockin' college app, if I keep up this record, but for now, I'd best worry about my grades and all that.

EDIT: I was going to make a rocket man icon, but apparently, my 105 icon thing isn't applicable anymore. ;_;
